4 things to remember when considering internships

Internships offer a fascinating insight into a world of work which is looking for people just like you, but anyone considering internships should be prepared. Follow these hints and tips, don’t panic and you may well be enjoying a new career sooner than you think!
1)                  Keep an open-mind: remember that just because you’re starting off on the ground floor making coffees, that doesn’t mean you’ll never progress. Speak to other members of staff and ask them how they progressed. Not only will internships give you vital insight into your possible career, it’ll put a smile on your face as you make the tea for the twenty-fifth time.
2)                  Dress and attitude is important: internships are work, as well as a way to have fun while learning about your chosen profession, so remember to turn up wearing appropriate clothing and with good personal hygiene. Which brings us to…
3)                  Punctuality is important: you may not be getting paid for the job you’re presently doing, but nobody should use internships as an excuse to turn up as and when they feel like it. Not only will this reflect badly in the short-term, but those comments won’t be easy to answer when you turn up for a real job in the future and your prospective boss questions how and why this happened.
4)                  Doing more than you need to is considered good working attitude: doing just enough to get by may seem OK for most internships, but your boss will see you in a much more favourable light if you decide to put in more effort without being told first!
